Kamiros village Rhodes island Greece

The municipality of Kamiros hosts some of the most magnificent sites on the island of Rhodes. The ancient city of Kamiros, whose 5th and 6th century ruins are beautifully maintained today, draws thousands of visitors every year.The city flourished in ancient and classical times and today it's economy is based on agriculture and growing tourism. 

The natural beauty of the surrounding area is well worth exploring. Coastal beaches and village communities dotted throughout the region make this a delightful touring destination. The village of Soroni on the northern coast, with its important monastery of Agios Soulas, hosts a fabulous festival in July with island sporting events, horse racing and traditional celebrations.. From Kalavarda you can travel inwards to Salakos , at the foot of Profitis Ilias. This area is well known for its breathtaking countryside and springs, ideal for walking and relaxing. Profitis Ilias is the site of the recently restored Italianate hotels of Elafos and Elafina. Here there is a cafe where you can enjoy the cool shade and magnificent views to the sea. The chapel of the saint , Profitis Ilias, is at the summit of the mountain.

There are several other small villages on the slopes of the mountain , notably Apollonas, a traditional village with an interesting folklore museum. This displays local costumes as well as artefacts and scenes from everyday life and is well worth a visit.
