Rhodes insurance - medical assistance
Theoretically, EU citizens are entitled to free medical treatment and hospitalisation when travelling in Europe. The EHIC ( EUROPEAN HEALTH INSURANCE CARD) now replaces the old E111 and forms are obtainable from post offices and travel agents and should be carried when travelling. In Greece, although rarely asked for, this would afford only the lowest grade of state hospital attention and not cover repatriation or transportation to other medical facilities if necessary. For this reason we strongly advise you to take adequate private medical insurance and assistance before departing for Greece.
Throughout Greece you will have access to varying degrees of medical assistance. All major towns and cities have hospitals and towns and resorts have rural clinics or private medical centres. Pharmacists in Greece are highly qualified and able to deal with the majority of minor injuries and afflications. Make sure you retain any receipts for pharmacy products, (which can be expensive) for reimbursement from your insurance company.
