Rhodes town by night

This evening excursion departs from Pefkos, from where we travel by air-conditioned coach along the east coast of the island to Rhodes Town, stopping at Mandraki Harbour. This is the island’s main port, the link between the Old and New towns and is just as lively at night as during the day, maybe even more so.

The harbour is a hub of activity in the evenings, when locals take their evening stroll or Volta, stopping off for a coffee or sweet pastry whilst considering where to take dinner. The New Market or Nea Agora backs Mandraki, with its Moorish domes and lively cafes. It is popular as a meeting place for people from the outlying villages on Rhodes and from other islands. Behind the Nea Agora, in the grounds of the Palace of the Grand Masters, a sound and light show is staged daily, telling the story of the ancient Knights and their overthrow, incorporating lasers and other impressive effects.

The Medieval walls encircling the Old Town of Rhodes are impressive during the day but create an even more dramatic backdrop at night when they are strikingly lit. Wandering around this part of the city in the evening is a magical experience, taking one or other of the maze of small streets which appear at regular intervals. The street you choose may house jewellers, shops offering icons and other religious artefacts, a leather workshop or two, maybe a stand with spices. You may well suddenly and unexpectedly come upon one of the town’s numerous historical sites from the Hellenistic, Byzantine or Turkish eras. Whichever lane you take, it will inevitably eventually lead you to one of the town’s squares, surrounded on all sides by bars, restaurants and cafes, all bustling with activity and all offering the opportunity to relax, soak up the atmosphere and watch the world go by.

Alternatively, if you prefer to live in the present, the New Town has a huge array of shops, especially boutiques, jewellers and shoe shops. Again you’ll be spoilt for choice in terms of cafes, bars and restaurants.
