Rhodes has been at the crossroads of civilisatrions throughout its history and has a unique and fascinating heritage. Rhodes town, is the largest lived - in Medieval city in Europe and is the capital of the Dodecanese islands.

The Old Town has been inhabited for more than 2400 years. The Palace of the Grand Masters, a spectacular building which dominates it, was the nerve centre of the Knights’ activities and survived earthquakes and siege (but was accidentally blown up in the 1800s)! The Old Town of Rhodes is packed with fascinating buildings, courtesy of the Knights and thanks to the fact that Rhodes was part of both the Roman and Byzantine empires. There are also plenty of opportunities to shop for souvenirs, ranging from jewellery, leather goods and carpets to herbs, spices and all sorts of other edible goodies. You will find an enormous number of restaurants, cafes and bars which cater for practically any taste and budget and plenty of shady areas to relax and watch the world go by.

Alternatively, if you prefer to live in the present, the New Town has a huge array of shops, especially boutiques, jewellers and shoe shops. Again you’ll be spoilt for choice in terms of cafes, bars and restaurants. Please note that most shops in the New Town are closed between 14:00 and 17:00.
